The native American plum grows all over North America in almost any soil, with very little maintenance required. It can be pruned into a small tree or kept as a shrub. Very fragrant white blooms are followed by a proliferation of yellow plums which can be eaten raw or made into jelly, fruit leather or wine. Great as an understory in an orchard or a wildlife border.
