Fast-growing, high-branched popular hardwood tree. Nuts are thick-shelled, full-flavored. Trees can be tapped to harvest sap. Tolerates colder climates than English walnut. Good shade tree. Roots produce toxin (Juglone) that limits grow on grasses and trees. Best planted with mulberries and most nitrogen fixers (black locust, peashrub, seaberry). Black walnut wood is highly desired.
